The Department of Conservation (DOC) has a camera on a Royal Albatross nest at Taiaroa Head near Dunedin. On 28th September 2017 the young albatross, Tumanako, stretched his wings on land one last time and took off on his first sea voyage. He's expected to head to South American waters where he will spend several years at sea. Tumanako's story can be watched at this YouTube link.

The male albatross YWK and the female KGY (named from the coloured banks of their left leg) are nesting again Their egg was laid on 7 November 2017 and is the 10th egg to be laid in the colony. As a type of continuing story you can watch the nesting albatrosses live on the DOC camera at www.doc.govt.nz/royalcam.
