During WW2 a NZ Columban Priest was martyred by Japanese soldiers in the Philippines. He came from Johnsonville in Wellington and was the priest at the Pililla church south east of Manilla. The Japanese suspected he had knowledge of guerrilla and American activity in the area and took him to a church at Paete some distance way. There they tortured him ruthlessly for three days but obtained no information from him. He was finally driven off on a truck and never seen again and presumed to have died shortly after. The local people regard Fr Douglas as a saviour as the many Philippine prisoners also held and tortured at the Paete church were subsequently released. The TV series Epitaph has an episode covering this amazing story and a short introduction is available at the following link courtesy Greenstone Films.
